"I first came across Colin Bennett's work in the pages of a long defunct
80s magazine called The Encyclopedia Psychedelica. Since then I have
followed his work in Fortean Times in the 90s and have most of his
published work.The Rumford Rogues is satirical fiction in a similar vein
to his previous fiction The Entertainment Bomb.
I found The Rumford Rogues an amusing read, the funniest bit was a
pastiche interview with Tony Blair
The author has a good eye for the ghastlier features of modern society,
some passages reminded me of Anthony Burgess works such as The Wanting
Seed and 1985. Colin Bennett is a genuine independent thinker and as a
result seems to be a non-person as far as the media world is concerned.I
am sure if he did become more well known he would be subjected to
character assassination of the sort practiced against Chris Morris for
the same reason that he refuses to toe the PC line. As it is he is only
for the select few who know of him . As an introduction I would
recommend his book on Charles Fort "Politics of the Imagination"

"Colin Bennett's Flying Saucers Over The White House
is a tribute to U.S. Air Force officer Captain Edward Ruppelt and his
findings in the field of "Ufology." Edward Ruppelt is credited for
having invented the term "unidentified flying object," which replaced
the term "flying saucer." The book focuses on UFO research, UFO culture
and history, alleged military cover-ups, Project Blue Book, and the
Condon Report. Edward Ruppelt is considered to be one of the founding
fathers of Ufology. He is renowned for his contributions in the
investigation of UFO phenomena, as well as in determining whether or not
there were discernible threats to national security.
Ruppelt often encountered difficult circumstances and doubters on his
job of explaining UFO sightings and reports. Working with the Pentagon,
Ruppelt established the new Project Grudge and authored the Report on
Unidentified Flying Objects, which was based on his findings.
Ruppelt states, "We found out that the UFOs frequently visited
Washington. On May 23 fifty targets had been tracked from 8:00PM till
midnight." Unfortunately, Bennett concludes that Ruppelt's brainchild,
Operation Blue Book, "is verbally and, hence conceptually, erased in an
operation that any hard-line Soviet commissar of the time would have
admired. Names and faces disappear, the stories come apart, hanging
together as threads and webs as little bits go missing." This is,
perhaps, the reason why so many people have heard of the term "UFO" but
have never heard of U.S. Air Force officer Captain Edward Ruppelt.
The Air Force investigations revealed that the UFOs posed no threat to
national security. Although people like Chieftain Samford are prepared
to do almost anything to prove that the UFO is a figment of the
imagination, Edward Ruppelt works tirelessly to establish credibility
for ufology.
Ultimately, Flying Saucers Over The White House sheds light on the life
of one man who single-handedly changed the way the government looked at
concepts like security. Colin Bennett's purpose in writing the book is
to present Edward Ruppelt's information to a newer, more open
generation--to let it decide what it wants to believe. There is
certainly enough evidence to warrant revisiting the issue. This is a
must read for anyone interested in the origins of unidentified flying
objects (UFOs), or in the reaction of the government toward what has
become a respectable area of study. "

Foreword
The world needs to put UFOs and Ufology in a radically
different perspective. As a culture it is at least as important as the
drawings of Piranesi or Michelangelo, or the paintings of Dali or
Chirico. What we get from such precious things we can get from the
story-architecture of Ufology, which is now an essential part of our
postmodern Imagination. Even in the kitchens of the most ardent sceptic
there will be some item which owes its shape and character to the UFO,
now a big prime-time star in the postmodern universe. As a Big Star, the
UFO is as unavoidable as are Elvis Presley, Monroe, Michael Jackson, the
idea of quantum entanglement, Black Holes or Warp Drives.
Ufology turns even downright imposture into a species of postmodern art
form, showing that the mechanical truth of a story is something of a
decoy. What matters is that the tale is told complete with all its
faults and deceptions and the supposed framework of its truths and lies.
Any story bar-codes us forever. Despite our acceptances and rejections,
we play with story games, we rehearse them, add new episodes even to
absurd claims, and despite ourselves again, we continue to develop even
the most dubious episodes, whether they are junk theatre or not.
The proof of this theory? Just try the impossible task of getting just
Marilyn Monroe out of our minds completely, or any other of the billion
harpies like her. We have been branded, colonised, turned into a fast
breeder of images by a swarming Host which we are powerless to resist.

8. Deconstructing Fact
It follows that cultures are run by scalable and best-selling
designer-narratives, not facts. We conceive therefore our cosmological
Big Media model of New Ufology as being built of steadily evolving and
equally deteriorating claims and episodes, not facts. Whether within the
Jesus narrative or the scientific narrative, facts perform only as the
final development stage or “show-room” stage of any product, which once
launched, appears to be objective in that it appears to be free of all
the chattering subtexts of the advertisements which go to make up
cultural product ranges.
Fact appears therefore merely as fine-tooled programme independent of
any ideology. This tactic helps divorce the Product from History, hence
concealing the agendas and targets of the Product, whether that Product
Range be Science, the Ten Commandments, the MJ-12 papers, the film Mars
Needs Moms, or the UK Royal Wedding (which was bigger than anything
Science can offer). The UFO itself is at the fine-tooling stage of fact
after being under construction for a long time. In the same sense, Adolf
Hitler the man and Eugenics the philosophy were both under construction
throughout the 19th century, reaching out towards one another like
strands of rogue story-protein.
Here by analogy is the interior of the Roswell atom, as it were.
Deconstructed, this can be seen as being an expression of the
architecture of such cultural advertising protein,
Fact is therefore the final development of the long chain of
advertisements which help run and support the Big Dolls that hold us in
thrall, whether they are Einstein, Lady GaGa, Hitler, or Mickey Mouse.
Each and every one of these Dolls can be regarded as intelligent
non-carbon life forms in themselves. They can be deconstructed to reveal
that they are built of competing archetypal advertisements. Such Dolls
can be inserted into the head as easily as can commercial TV programs,
whether they express a nudist philosophy, religious software or
“scientific” claims for UFO “reality” (surely the favourite word of UFO
investigators). The Big Dolls themselves fight for prime time
consciousness, and they come in different sizes and pseudo-physical
forms. Examples from world Literature include Hamlet’s Elsinore ,
Hardy’s Edgon Heath, and Kafka’s Castle. From “real world” culture we
have our Media and Entertainment complex, manufacturing the biggest
non-cerebral dolls of all history. Thus Literature and Life are
mirror-like reflections: like Hitler again, Goneril and Regan of King
Lear become massive savage Dolls laying waste to anything and
everything, just as Big Media and its non-cerebral systems have laid
waste to what was once called Intellect.
The cult of objectivity destroyed the relationship between Mind and
Landscape. This is why when 911 happened we had no language to describe
just exactly what hit us.

Society came to blows after water balloons were hurled at the
protesters. After the attack on the protesters, a fight broke out with
one participant being punched in the face. Protesters claim that those
who threw the balloons were members and/or
supporters of the Students’ Union Jewish Society, although leaders of
that organisation have condemned the attack.
It started as members of the Palestine Society formed a mock checkpoint
outside of the St. Clements Building. Students were stopped before
entering the building and asked by protesters for “I.D.” or “papers.” As
the protest continued, certain Jewish students complained of “harassment
and intimidation” as access to St. Clements was “blocked.”
We’ve seen in previous articles (notably in The
Transhumanist and Police State Agenda in Pop Music) that the concept of
transhumanism, which can be defined as the merging of humans and robots,
is

abundantly promoted in music videos, movies and video games. On top of
this “indirect” kind of promotion, transhumanism is being sold through
more direct channels such as documentaries, television features and news
reports. The main face of the movement is the American inventor Ray
Kurzweil who has recently been on a massive PR campaign to promote what
he calls “Singularity” (a term that is probably less threatening than “transhumanism”).
Kurzweil is however not a lone nut with a
crazy futuristic dream. He works in collaboration with the world’s most
powerful people in business and politics. For example, in February 2009,
Kurzweil
collaborated with Google and the NASA Ames Research Center, to create
the Singularity University training center for corporate executives and
government officials. The University’s self-described mission is to
“assemble, educate and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to
understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing
technologies and apply, focus and guide these tools to address
humanity’s grand challenges”. It is safe to say that transhumanism is
not only the goal of one man but of the entire global elite. For this
reason, the merging of humans and robots is not only promoted as
something “cool” and positive in mass media, it is announced, despite
its potential pitfalls, as an inevitability.

France, Britain agree on UAV cooperation amid strengthening of defence ties
"There is a letter of intent for the long-term," French Defence Minister Gerard Longuet told Reuters after the summit.
"We are working together for the medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drone and we are thinking together what the future combat drone should be."
Longuet said France's Dassault Aviation and British defence contractor BAE Systems would develop the unmanned aircraft. The two companies would also start work on a next-generation unmanned fighter jet, he said.

DARPA plans 'Avatar' surrogate robots
Could soldiers of the future fight battles in robot
bodies controlled from afar? DARPA apparently thinks so, and the agency
wants to create an army of surrogate fighting droids.
The U.S. military's research wing apparently is planning surrogates like
in the film "Avatar" but with robots instead of giant Na'vi. It has a $7
million program code-named "Avatar" in its 2013 budget, according to
Wired.
The robots would reduce risk to human fighters, just as thousands of
aerial drones are already keeping pilots out of harm's way.
"The Avatar program will develop interfaces and algorithms to enable a
soldier to effectively partner with a semi-autonomous bi-pedal machine
and allow it to act as the soldier's surrogate," Wired quoted DARPA as
saying.
The robots' duties will include "room clearing, sentry control [and]
combat casualty recovery."
If that sounds far-fetched, consider that the technology to control a
humanoid robot with a brain-machine interface, while rudimentary, has
been around for years, as shown with Honda's Asimo robot.
Meanwhile, DARPA developer Boston Dynamics has also been experimenting
with humanoids. Petman is a full-size anthropomorphic bot that's
ostensibly designed to test chemical weapons suits. It isn't weaponized,
but boy can it put on a mean display of push-ups.
No doubt several hundred Petman avatars mounted on Boston Dynamics'
nightmarish AlphaDog robo-mules would inspire enough terror in any foe
to win an engagement without a shot fired.
Just send in the robo-cavalry and it's a done deal.

challenge, Alan Turing turned his mathematical mind to one of the

Now, 60 years on, scientists have discovered that Turing's theory for
why repeated patterns occur in nature was absolutely correct.
In his 1952 paper The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis, the code breaker
proposed that animals’ stripes and spots are caused by the interaction
of a pair of chemicals, dubbed ‘morphogens’.

As I have repeatedly pointed out in articles and in radio appearances,
Google’s business model relies on collecting boatloads of highly
sensitive user information, along with Facebook and others.
To some, this is harmless and is only used to monetize their services by
selling highly targeted advertising. To others, this is a distur
bing
invasion of privacy and the massive amounts of personal information
collected by these services, which is often handed over to governments,
is a matter of concern.
Of course the former is highlighted over the latter in coverage by the
establishment media. They highlight the ability to “personalize”
services with all of the information collected and the highly targeted
advertising made possible by the collection of all of this information.
They also make a point of calling this type of behavior “innovative”
instead of characterizing it as the insidious erosion of our basic right

WASHINGTON — Should Israel decide to launch a strike
on Iran, its pilots would have to fly more than 1,000 miles across
unfriendly airspace, refuel in the air en route, fight off Iran’s air
defenses, attack multiple underground sites simultaneously — and use at
least 100 planes.
That is the assessment of American defense officials and military
analysts close to the Pentagon, who say that an Israeli attack meant to
set back Iran’s nuclear program would be a huge and highly complex
operation. They describe it as far different from Israel’s “surgical”
strikes on a nuclear reactor in Syria in 2007 and Iraq’s Osirak reactor
in 1981.
“All the pundits who talk about ‘Oh, yeah, bomb Iran,’ it ain’t going to
be that easy,” said Lt. Gen. David A. Deptula, who retired last year as
the Air Force’s top intelligence official and who planned the American
air campaigns in 2001 in Afghanistan and in the 1991 Gulf War.

Facebook hacking student Glenn Mangham jailed after Met Police and FBI probe
Glenn Mangham, aged 26, from York, pleaded guilty to
computer misuse offences at Southwark Crown Court. A probe was launched
in May 2011 when Facebook Inc became aware there had been a security
breach of its internal network. The matter was reported to the FBI in
San Jose who established the source of the unauthorised access came from
the UK. The case was referred to the Met’s central e-crime unit (PCeU).
When Mangham was arrested in June he admitted gaining unauthorised
access to Facebook’s systems and extracted internal intellectual
material from its servers.
No personal user data was compromised by Mangham’s actions and the
intellectual property was secured by police. Detective Chief Inspector
Terry Wilson, of the Met’s PCeU, said: “This was a dynamic response that
saw PCeU officers - working alongside the FBI and North Yorkshire Police
- quickly recovering stolen intellectual property.”
Mangham was also given a serious crime prevention order restricting his
access to the internet and forfeiture of computer equipment.

The formal trial stage in the case of the WikiLeaks
suspect Bradley Manning will begin on February 23, the US military has
announced, when the soldier will be arraigned on all 22 counts relating
to the largest leak of state secrets in American history. Manning will
be transferred on that day from his current imprisonment at Fort
Leavenworth in Kansas to Fort Meade in Maryland, where he will be read
all the charges against him and asked to give his plea. It will be the
first occasion that he has come in front of a military judge
representing the full power of the court martial system. In most cases,
the arraignment is a short and routine hearing that marks the accused's
official bringing to trial. In Manning's case, however, it presents his
trial lawyer David Coombs with the opportunity to raise objections to
the conduct of the prosecution against his client.
In particular, Coombs has the option to complain about the exceptional
length of time that Manning has been languishing in military jail. Under
the US constitution, court martial cases must be brought within 120 days
of charges being preferred against a suspect. The military rule book,
under rule 707 for speedy trial, makes clear that military justice must
be dispensed quickly. It says that in some circumstances, delays may be
prejudicial to the accused and may result in dismissal of the case.

Robots could soon be capable of real-time autonomous
navigation by creating and continuously updating an internal
three-dimensional map. Indeed, researchers at MIT's Computer Science and
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have designed such a system
based on advanced algorithms and a low-cost interactive camera like the
one found in Microsoft's Kinect. To explore unknown environments, robots
need to map in real-time as they move around - for example - estimating
the distance between themselves and nearby wall, while pla
nning
a route around any obstacles.
Although a significant amount of research has been devoted to coding
one-off navigational maps for robots, they are incapable of adjusting to
changes in their surroundings over time.
"[For example], if you see objects that were not there previously, it is
difficult for a robot to incorporate that into its map," explained CSAIL
researcher Maurice Fallon.
As such, MIT researchers have come up with a new approach, based on a
technique dubbed Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM,) which
allows robots to constantly update a map as they learn new information
over time. The team has already tested SLAM on robots equipped with
expensive laser-scanners, but recently demonstrated how a robot can
locate itself in such a map with just a low-cost Kinect-like camera.

Anonymous takes down government sites in massive anti-ACTA attack
Early Friday, several websites owned and operated by
the US government were defaced as part of latest protest against online
censorship. Anonymous, the elusive hacktivist group known for
masterminding similar assaults, is taking credit.
At least half a dozen federal websites belonging to the United States
government were disrupted in the latest Anonymous-led assault this week.
The US Federal Trade Commission was the primary target of the
infiltration, and along with it Anonymous managed to take down the sites
for National Consumer Protection Week as well as the Consumer Protection
Agency, the Federal Trade Commission and others. In place of the
websites’ traditional homepages, Anonymous operatives left a message to
the US government and other international bodies: world leaders should
rethink the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA — an
in-the-works agreement between more than a dozen major nations.

During World War II, my father, Leonard Dionne and
mother, Ruth Sweet Sawyer, both worked at Polaroid Corporation in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. They both worked on Project Dove, a U. S. Navy
sponsored project to build a bomb that could be dropped from airplanes
and "home in" on ships using an electronic guidance system that detected
the heat from the ships' engines. It was the first heat-seeking missile.
My father worked in the engineering department, making the prototype
mechanical parts, and my mother worked in the drafting department. They
were married in 1947.
My father kept a box of parts from the project, and as a kid I played
around with them. He explained how the guidance system worked. An
infrared detector with a gold plated parabolic reflector was mounted on
a gyroscopically stabilized gimbal arrangement. Small pre-amplifier
circuit modules were mounted on or near the gimbals. These used
miniature vacuum tubes and would fit in about a one inch cube. More
circuits were in odd shaped metal "cans," roughly 3 by 3 by 8 inches,
with the components "potted" in wax, including slightly larger vacuum
tubes. The bomb's fins were moved by DC motors driving a long screw. The
master control was a clockwork mechanism that turned a shaft with cams
operating micro-switches. Since the guidance system was under
development, there was also instrumentation to record what happened as
the bomb was falling. Information was recorded on a strip of 35mm film.

the GOP all-stars feel about appearances in MAD Magazine. Do they think
it's an honor to be poked fun at by a magazine that's been doing it for
so long? Do they shrug it off, assuming that only morons and teenagers
(and teenage morons) read it?
Or do they get upset that the media is taking yet another easy potshot
at their clear lack of sensibility?
Can you imagine the kind of mind that would be upset by appearing in MAD

The criminal inquiry into a suspected Iranian plot
targeting Israelis overseas with magnetized bombs expanded on Thursday,
with the police in Thailand seeking a fifth suspect and investigators in
India scrutinizing
records of telephone calls made to the Middle East around the time of an
attack in New Delhi that wounded an Israeli diplomat’s wife and her
driver.
The widened scope of the investigation came as both Iran and Hezbollah,
the Lebanon-based militant organization financed and armed by Iran,
stridently rejected Israeli accusations of responsibility for the plot,
in which components of magnetized bombs resembling those used to
assassinate Iranian nuclear scientists were discovered in a rented
Bangkok house on Tuesday. That discovery was made after an errant
explosion at the house, one day after the attack in New Delhi and an
attempted attack on an Israeli Embassy member in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Some Middle East experts have speculated that Iran and Hezbollah have
denied involvement partly to distance themselves from the suspects who
botched the plot, which had the appearance of sloppy amateurishness.

(Reuters) - A suicide bomber detonated his explosive
vest outside a mosque in a Shi'ite neighborhood Friday in Pakistan's
northwestern Kurram tribal region, killing at least 26 people,
government officials said. Three more people were killed when police
shot at protesters from the Shi'ite community after the bombing in
Parachinar, the main town in Kurram, an official said. A curfew was
imposed in the town.
The bomber struck outside the mosque in a busy market after Friday
prayers, in the latest attack by Sunni militants against minority
Shi'ites.
Kurram, the only part of Pakistan's border region that has a significant
Shi'ite population, has been racked by sectarian violence between Sunni
and Shi'ite tribes. The Taliban and al Qaeda's virulent anti-Shi'ite
ideology has meant years of bloody fighting.
Fazal Saeed, leader of a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban,
claimed responsibility for the latest attack in Kurram, near the Afghan
border.

A powerful trade group that lists the biggest names in the entertainment
biz as its members has called-out dozens of countries in their latest
report and is insisting on sanctions against them.
The International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA) has submitted
its annual watch list to the Office of the US Trade Representative, and
in it they single out Canada, China, Russia and India — as well as over
30 other countries — for allegedly failing to do all they can to protect
the intellectual property rights of American entertainers.

day in Syria since the al-Assad family took the reins of power. Yet,
until very recently you would never know that from the media reports and
international proclamations. Only now, with Syria in the midst of a
revolt, do we see extensive media coverage of the country. Even so, the
world continues to be more exorcised by Israelis pouring concrete in the
West Bank than by Syran soldiers raining deadly shells onto the people
of Homs.
Now look a little deeper. Recently, a hacker group released hundreds of
e-mails from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s office. One document
revealed the methods for preparation of Assad for his December 2011
interview with ABC's Barbara Walters. Unlike the Israelis, the Syrians
actually listen to the communications professionals.

Before
Li Ziqing developed a fascination with artificial intelligence and
created the country's most sophisticated biometric tracking network, he
made loudspeakers out of salvaged lumber - at age 15, when few Chinese
knew what high-fidelity meant. His interest in engineering compelled him
to study at the University in National University of Defense Technology
until 1985. Over time, he came to focus on pattern recognition, then a
new artificial intelligence development. "I still loved radio, but I
found it had failed to push forward new technology and satisfy my
curiosity about the outside world," Li says.
Biometrics was born as a field in the mid-1960s. It focused on
recognizing faces, fingerprints and voices. But it wasn't until the
1990s that these technologies were seriously field tested or used. Since
then, biometrics has moved from the realm of Hollywood fancy to
real-world applications, such as biometric passports. Li went to the
United Kingdom and worked at Microsoft Research Asia before entering the
security sector. The Eye-CU facial recognition system he developed was a
smash hit at Microsoft's 2002 internal science fair and was demonstrated
by Bill Gates.

Anonymous Hackers Target US Military Intelligence
Anonymous hackers have re-targeted US military intelligence agencies,
releasing two teaser documents as a "taste of what's to come". The
Anonymous collective announced the new attack on Wednesday via Twitter.
The two tweets stemmed from the AnonymousIRC Twitter account and
contained links to two
documents,
allegedly taken from U.S. Army headquarters. Specifically, the two
documents were a January 2010 Intelligence Officer handbook and an
January 2008 Intelligence Support to Urban Operations document. Released
as downloadable PDFs the collective described the documents as teasers,
indicating its intention to do a larger data dump.
The attack follows an ongoing campaign by Anonymous against the
U.S. military and its contractors. Previously the collective has mounted
attacks on analysis company Stratfor, biotech firm Monsanto and military
contractor Booz Allen Hamilton for their current and past ties to the
U.S. Army.
The leak was later credited as a part of Anonymous's ongoing Operation
Anti-Security. Started in the 1990s, Anonymous re-affirmed its
commitment to the movement in August 2011, when it declared war on the
world's banks and governments.

FBI might shutdown the Internet on March 8
Millions of computer users across the world could be blocked off from
the Internet as early as March 8 if the FBI follows through with plans
to yank a series of servers originally installed to combat corruption.
Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed
responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the
DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted
computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in
America alone. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation later stepped up
by replacing the rogue Trojan with servers of their own in an attempt to
remediate the damage, but the fix was only temporary. Now the FBI is
expected to end use of those replacement servers as early as next month
and, at that point, the Internet for millions could essentially be over.

researchers in the Mars anomaly research community believed that it was
either a statue or the fossilized remains of a humanoid being on Mars.

Hundreds of suspected paedophile priests plague California
Spanish Catholics colonized California starting in the 1700s, paving the
way for what would become one of the most populated — and popular — of
the 50 United States.
Today, however, the footprints of those missionaries reveal something
far scarier than most realize.
According to a Los Angeles-based attorney, around 200 Catholic priests
tied to allegations of child abuse live across the Golden Coast state of
California. What’s more is that none of them have been charged with
crimes and most reside in communities completely unaware of their
presence.
“Many if not all these priests have admitted to sexual abuse,” attorney
Ray Boucher tells MNBC. Yet due to a milestone settlement that served as
a mere slap on the wrist for several hundreds of allegations of sexual
assault on minors, those alleged offenders are free from persecution —
and publication.
The Los Angeles Archdiocese paid out an unprecedented settlement in
2007, one that awarded 500 plaintiffs who insisted that priests had
abused them to the tune of $660 million. As part of the plea, however,
many of the hundreds of priests named in the case escaped relatively
unscathed. Some admitted their crimes and other remained only alleged
sex criminals. None of those priests were actually convicted though,
which allowed them to slip through the cracks and into obscurity where
an estimated 200 now reside, uncharged and unknown to the families
around them.

They are all more than ready to stick a "factual" agenda needle in you at the drop of a hat. But Jack Sarfatti is different... very different!
"Jack Sarfatti is one of the most interesting individuals I have
encountered over the years. Not live and in person, just his
publications. He is a physicist who is not afraid to step out of the box
and not afraid to blaze new trails. Some of his trails lead to
interesting places.
Take a look at The God Phone. It is the first of his writings I have
encountered, and perhaps in it's simplicity, the most interesting.
The most interesting idea that comes out of this article, at least to
me, is the idea that the future creates itself by sending information
back into the past.
I find this idea intriguing for a number of reasons. I occasionally have
lucid dreams. For those who aren't familiar with this term, it's a dream
where you become aware that you are dreaming. When this happens to me I
take conscious control of the dream and can go anywhere or any time,
just by thinking about it.
My wanderings have taken me to the moon, where I did not see anything
particularly interesting except how impressive it was to stand on the
surface and take it in, the stark contrast, the bright surface, the
blackness of space.
The interesting thing about going to the moon was that, in this
spiritual form or whatever you want to call it, I could breath and was
aware of my breath, in spite of the lack of atmosphere. I was also fully
aware that I should not be able to breath, or at least wouldn't be able
to in body, without an atmosphere. Still, it seemed perfectly natural
under the circumstances."

At first glance, it is an utterly benign and heart-warming story, a tale
of child-rescue and salvation, of friendship across the ocean at a time
of war. And for those involved, especially the children sheltered from
Hitler’s bombs by one of America’s most prestigious universities, it was
no more complicated than that: an act of altruistic, life-saving
generosity. And yet this story might have a twist, a suspicion that
somewhere behind this deed of great kindness lurked a darker motive.
The story – which forms the backdrop of my new novel, Pantheon,
published under the pseudonym Sam Bourne – begins in the mid-summer of
1940, with Britain isolated and alone against the Nazi menace. The
nations of Europe had fallen in succession to the Germans, with the Low
Countries and France conquered a matter of weeks earlier. To an extent
that is barely appreciated now, Britons felt they were near-certain to
be next, that it was only a matter of time before there were Nazi
jackboots on British streets.
