Editor Panzerben briefs his assault squad prior to yet another raid on the Sceptical HQ in Brentford Leisure Centre, the lair of the Magonian Pelicans.
We at the Combat Dairies wish to thank our many well wishers in Britain and America who have asked after our welfare during the recent bombings. For myself and countless others here in Britain the event was a dread reminder of what we lived through in London for some 25 years or more during the savage IRA bombing campaigns of the 70s and 80s in the last century. The tube bombings of 7/7 of course were on a bigger scale than any single IRA strike, with the present death figure standing at 50 or more and approximately a 500 injuries, many serious. As with the IRA devastation, the first thing that strikes about this kind of experience is the contrast between death, blood and gore and the smiling affluence represented by the leering advertisements surrounding it in every modern Western city. Staring down from walls, they appear to gloat over the deaths like mocking and malevolent gods. But I suppose 9/11 did nothing to change the bedrock TV schedules. The connections between consumerism and slaughter have never been more clear. The most frightening realization is that this incident represents a much wider and deeper tragic schema than the boring narrow nationalism of the IRA conflict or the tired student politics of the Israeli-Palestinian situation. Both are now old in the historical tooth, and contain major elements that are somewhat familiar and to a certain degree understood. The present war situation (and it is just that) is not understood.
A legitimate comparison can be made between the First and Second World Wars. For better or for worse, the Kaiser’s War contained no mysteries. It was a good old-fashioned imperialistic bash compared to Hitler’s War, whose ideology was formed by the mystical ideology of an occult philosophy. The deadly phenomenon we are now faced with is a thing from this second category. The terms of liberal democratic analysis will not make sense of the slaughter which started long before there was a single US soldier in the Middle East, and long before the State of Israel was created.
I am trying to avoid of course the word and concept of moral evil. This is a moral term which has no rational derivation. The difference between corrupt wickedness and evil is profound. The Kaiser has gone long ago. The Somme is history. Auschwitz is still with us every minute of the day. At the Nuremburg trials of course such terms of reference were hardly considered. As such, no legal terms could possible define what happened in Europe between 1939 and 1945. It was quite beyond the brain of the traditional historians (Bullock, Taylor, Roper) and barrister minds (Shawcross) and consequently we hung the Nazis more or less as horse-thieves.
Mirroring the external internal conflicts in Mind consciousness and society through art Literature (and indeed Science), without an idea of Tragedy in the framework of Sophocles and Aristotle’s Poetics we will of course understand nothing at all. The study of Tragedy of course is gone with T.R. Henn of Cambridge and the courses have now been replaced by politically correct courses for managers of something called “educational software.” Without Greek Tragedy of course we will understand nothing. Invisibilities will murder us, things of airy nothing will utterly consume us. Whenever two Shakespearian characters are talking alone there is a third persona always present, that the system. For the system,(either Macbeth’s castle or Hamlet’s Elsinore) is live as any brain, and as a form of cosmological being to ignore it is to court disaster. The system is the modern Western sense is the military industrial complex. I explore this constellation pretty thoroughly in my new book, An American Demonology.
Science and Scepticism
There have recently been many web attacks on UFO believers and “New Age” folk, mostly by scientists and sceptics. Why are scientists so afraid and so censorious of all contemporary heightened experience? Science did not emerge new born as a clean deal devoid of metaphysics and owes its very life to mystical cosmologies. Chemistry for example, certainly emerged from alchemical ideas, and more often than not, language and hence psycho-social concept play a part in evolving “scientific” ontologies. Rutherford, after his famous experiment, said to Soddy (his assistant) “don’t say we have achieved transmutation – they will call us alchemists.” This surely represents the paranoia of the lower middle-class from which most scientists emerge. For them, the need for good behaviour ranks with the need for scientific “truth.” Many fundamental scientific ideas came from what Arthur Koestler calls in The Sleepwalkers “fantasy-prone intellects” dabbling in cosmologies. Kepler and Copernicus were such examples, and neither would have been allowed to enter modern grey university structures. According to recent scholarship, Newton spent most of his time involved with alchemical ideas, and certainly Faraday’s intense preoccupation with mystical Christianity caused what today would be called bouts of insanity. Many mathematicians (particularly those involved with number systems) speak of awe when, through synchronicities the system appears to be conscious of what they are doing, and the investigator appears to become the investigated. Evidence for this “effect” has recently emerged from the work of Robert Jahn at Princeton (see http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,68216,00.html). Such a “live” dialogue between Mind and Nature (discussed in Chapter 10 above) was of course fully understood and accepted by Shakespeare and many other Renaissance thinkers and writers. Cosmologies are present in all human expression from soap operas to nuclear physics, and they are all created around various kinds of complex metaphor, Metaphor is in turn involved with the mysteries of personality and character. The assumption of objectivity as a clean mode of perception is therefore a most risky first premise. The path from the first marks on Marie Curie’s hand to nuclear fission alone is paved with questions of politics and race, religion and philosophy. This path is anything but a road on which factual sand grain is piled on top of factual sand grain in a simple linear sense of “disinterested” sixth-form science and common media “objective presentation.”
Science is therefore a live cultural theatre, representing a dirty, noisy, and often slaughterous path to what we call “discovery.” The reasoning involved in the process is often engineered self-deceptions based on jury-rigged metaphors, such as “lines of force” and the “limit” in the Calculus. As Whitehead pointed out in Adventures of Ideas, much psycho-social propaganda is present in scientific progress as it struggles for cultural Prime Time. We might well bear in mind the thought that a well-behaved universe is a universe which is easy to control politically.
Since bland corporate conformity gets us absolutely nowhere in science or anything else, the “outsider” fulfils an essential anomalistic function. In this respect, corporate team-work was almost unknown historically. All the great mathematicians and scientists were highly differentiated and idiosyncratic individuals just like the theoretical physicist Jack Sarfatti. Certainly the brilliant Jack, whose work we often feature puts a human face on science, often revealing it to be a veritable snake-pit as full of anger and bitterness, conflict and tragedy, fraud and mistakes as an estaminet full of frenzied Impressionist painters, which most scientists are in a way.
In this respect, science has yet to be socially and psychologically demythologized. The manufactured images of the toothpaste commercials of inevitably admirable and “brilliant” folks have to be changed, if only because most scientists are anything but brilliant! The white-coated “good and clever” bourgeois sons and daughters, well-behaved and socially adjusted to a fault, is yet another Orwellian lie.
If, just like the nut-and-bolt Victorian Station Masters of Old Ufology and their Maoist convictions, we believe that by getting rid of all deviations from the norm, the shining truth will be revealed, then we are guilty of practicing intellectual eugenics, and we all know where that led to.

An American Demonology. Bennett writes:
“Project Blue Book was the official US Air Force investigation into the UFO phenomenon. Captain Edward Ruppelt was in charge of Blue Book in the early 1950s, and after he had left the Air Force, he wrote The Report into Unidentified Flying Objects. Good books by insiders involved in the early development of the Industrial Military Complex are most rare. Ruppelt’s book is a unique and personal glimpse inside the management systems, politics, and burgeoning technology of what was to become an American national institution as well as a military organization. Report into Unidentified Flying Objects is a personal testimony, to be put on the shelf alongside Che Guevara’s Reminiscences of the Cuban Revolutionary War and T.E. Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom. We see power struggles, personality clashes, military intrigue, Intelligence paranoia, cover-ups and conspiracies. Ruppelt’s story is one of struggles within the Air Force and indeed struggles within himself regarding loyalties, policy, and the need for keeping secrets. As a humble USAF Reserve captain with few resources and staff, he was handed no less the task of analyzing what in all likelihood was an alien invasion! I specialize in portraiture, as exemplified by my book on George Adamski, Looking for Orthon, and my prize-winning biography of Charles Fort, Politics of the Imagination. Literary portraiture tells us a lot more than mere mechanical research and the sand-grain piling up of case history upon case history. The truth about a human being lies in the interplay of image, symbol, and metaphor between culture and personality, time and history, and I hope I have explored this unique drama in An American Demonology.”

Resume: Readers will remember that the Tuffty, in his search for the Fortean Times Unconvention meeting in central London, had a most shocking experience with Whirling Dervishes in The Commonwealth Institute. He took refuge in a local coffee shoppe in Kensington High Street to recover after he discovered that the Whirling Dervishes were all blacked-up members of the “arts” sections of the “quality newspapers” on a “sympathy for Africa” week. Many were his old school chums who were unwitting victims of a fundamental mistake in English public school education. They had not been informed by their worthy history masters that whirling dervishes are Turkish. |

Having survived such a terrible blast of English liberal angst as would have blasted the Long Johns off an archbishop, he resolved once more to seek out the whereabouts of the Fortean Times Unconvention, rumoured to be taking place in some priest hole in the Euston Road, organised by the Fied Slice, the in-house Manager Here are his thoughts about a new article for the Fortean Times as he made his way towards the Euston Road, braving bombs, traffic jams, screaming sirens and a full strike at Heathrow.
“I think I shall title my article Crapauds: Toads and Toad Life. That’s sure to raise some excitement amidst the savants and Victorian Station Masters of my fan club. Quite lately a delightful book was published in Paris, “La Vie des Crapauds,” by Monsieur Jean Rostand, which is devoted entirely to the fascinating batrachian. No one intending to keep a toad should fail to procure a copy of the book, which has been translated into English under the title “Toads and Toad Life.” How fashion changes! The great naturalist Cuvier, whom one can scarcely imagine to have been squeamish over crawling animals, described the toad as being both “hideous and revolting,” while Gessner declared “its glance is enough to make a man turn pale and ill.” But what a different character does the toad get from his admirer and biographer,Monsieur Rostand !
